Rescue and Rehabilitation
We provide a snake removal and rescue service in Walvis Bay, Swakopmund and Henties Bay in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Toursim. Many snakes we rescue were found injured. We also take in injured snakes from other snake handlers throughout the country. Together with our wonderful vets at Swakop Vet Clinic and Dr Mari de Villiers in Windhoek they have been treated and rehabilitated. Release in a safe environment is the gold prize but many of them cannot be released and spend their lives with us in a safe, warm environment working as ambassadors for their species helping to educate people about reptile conservation to save their reptilian brothers and sisters.
Here we would like to introduce you to some of them and tell you their stories.
Citrine
She is a female boomslang who came to us with a penetrating injury right through her body and out of the other side. We did not think she could possible survive such a devastating injury but she was alive and seemed quite strong so we treated her. Initially she refused to eat but day by day she started to recover. The day she ate for the first time after the injury was a celebration and the day she passed faeces was a bigger celebration. By some miracle non of her internal organs was seriously damaged although she is missing quite a lot of ribs and some muscle on side with the exit wound. She has a large dent in her body on one side and needs assistance shedding as the scar tissue does not function like normal skin but she is alive and well.
